Thriller (1982)
Posted on October 24th, 2009 No comments

Thriller is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Michael Jackson. The album was released on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records as the follow-up to Jackson’s critically and commercially successful 1979 album Off the Wall. Thriller explores similar genres to those of Off the Wall, including funk, disco, soul, soft rock, R&B and pop. However, Thriller’s lyrics deal with generally darker themes, including paranoia and the supernatural.
With a production budget of US$750,000, recording sessions took place between April and November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California. Assisted by producer Quincy Jones, Jackson wrote four of Thriller’s nine tracks. Following the release of the album’s first single “The Girl Is Mine”, some observers assumed Thriller would only be a minor hit record. With the release of the second single “Billie Jean”, the album topped the charts in many countries. At its peak, the album was selling a million copies a week worldwide. In just over a year, Thriller becameand currently remainsthe best-selling album of all time. Sales are estimated to be in excess of 60 million copies sold worldwide. Seven of the album’s nine songs were released as singles, and all reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards at the 1984 Grammys, including awards in three different genrespop, R&B and rock.
Thriller cemented Jackson’s status as one of the predominant pop stars of the late 20th century, and enabled him to break down racial barriers via his appearances on MTV and meetings with President Ronald Reagan at the White House. The album was one of the first to use music videos as successful promotional toolsthe videos for “Thriller”, “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” all received regular rotation on MTV. In 2001, a special edition issue of the album was released, which contains additional audio interviews, a demo recording and the song “Someone In the Dark”, which was a Grammy-winning track from the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial storybook. In 2008, the album was reissued again as Thriller 25, containing re-mixes that feature contemporary artists, a previously unreleased song and a DVD.
Thriller ranked number 20 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2003, and was listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers at number three in their Definitive 200 Albums of All Time. Thriller was preserved by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry, as it was deemed “culturally significant.”

Procol Harum 1969 03 15 Ny ‘easter Island’

Here’s some more vintage Procol Harum, this one a live recording from the original Procol Harum lineup, in 1969 (and probably the best sounding live Procol boot available from this era). This boot contains 2 New York shows, but is known as ‘Easter Island’ (I have no idea why). Procol Harum was one of the great pioneers of progressive rock, and their odd combination of classical themes and styles (provided by Brooker’s melancholy vocals and Fisher’s church-like organ) with the searing R&B-style guitar jams of Robin Trower remains unique. So, check out this unique piece of rock history.
As a side note, Procol Harum was actually the very first rock concert I ever went to as a young teenager, at a place called ‘The Kinetic Playground’ (a cramped, dumpy, converted warehouse) in Chicago, IL, back in the early ’70’s (Gentle Giant was the opening act). Brings back long distant memories.Tracks 1 to 9: Live at the Fillmore East, March 15, 1969

Warlock – Burning The Witches (1984)
Posted on October 21st, 2009 No commentsWarlock – Burning The Witches (1984)

Genre: Heavy Metal
Length: 36:29
Size: 241MB (247MB w/ extras)
Format: FLACTrack List:
1. Sign Of Satan
2. After The Bomb
3. Dark Fade
4. Homicide Rocker
5. Without You
6. Metal Racer
7. Burning The Witches
8. Hateful Guy
9. Holding MeReview: Metal-Observer (9.5/10)
Another gem of German Heavy Metal is “Burning The Witches” by Düsseldorfers own WARLOCK. Unfortunately the band never managed to break through like their colleagues of ACCEPT or SCORPIONS, the music definitely has not been the problem. Especially Burning , which originally was released via Mausoleum Records, is an absolute classic that does not have hide from masterpieces like “Breaker” (ACCEPT) or “Love At First Sting” (SCORPIONS) at all. At least musically.
Productionwise it was quite a bit different, though. The sound is not very crunchy, but what would you expect, if you set out with a dime and cheap instruments? Compared to current high tech productions the whole thing sounds pretty ridiculous, but the old school maniac could not imagine the album any differently Anyway, it didnt sound that bad and the music more than makes up for that again. The mix of melody, catchiness, heaviness etc. really works.
Differently said: the songs will rock your socks off!!! Murderous riff attacks like “After The Bomb” meet choruses that shoot directly into your ears and neck muscles like “Burning The Witches” (two beers + this album and youll bang through this album, guaranteed). Doros great, raunchy siren then gives you the rest. This is how Metal is supposed to be: sweat-inducing, arse-kicking and off you go! Who now wants to know, why WARLOCK fare better than, for example, NOISEHUNTER, VETO, HIGH TENSION… forget it, I cant tell you why, its just like that. Maybe the songs are a tad bit more hymnic, but I cant really explain it.
