    Review: Metal-Observer (9.5/10)

Another gem of German Heavy Metal is “Burning The Witches” by Düsseldorfer’s own WARLOCK. Unfortunately the band never managed to break through like their colleagues of ACCEPT or SCORPIONS, the music definitely has not been the problem. Especially “Burning…”, which originally was released via Mausoleum Records, is an absolute classic that does not have hide from masterpieces like “Breaker” (ACCEPT) or “Love At First Sting” (SCORPIONS) at all. At least musically.

Productionwise it was quite a bit different, though. The sound is not very crunchy, but what would you expect, if you set out with a dime and cheap instruments? Compared to current high tech productions the whole thing sounds pretty ridiculous, but the old school maniac could not imagine the album any differently… Anyway, it didn’t sound that bad and the music more than makes up for that again. The mix of melody, catchiness, heaviness etc. really works.

Differently said: the songs will rock your socks off!!! Murderous riff attacks like “After The Bomb” meet choruses that shoot directly into your ears and neck muscles like “Burning The Witches” (two beers + this album and you’ll bang through this album, guaranteed). Doro’s great, raunchy siren then gives you the rest. This is how Metal is supposed to be: sweat-inducing, arse-kicking and off you go! Who now wants to know, why WARLOCK fare better than, for example, NOISEHUNTER, VETO, HIGH TENSION… forget it, I can’t tell you why, it’s just like that. Maybe the songs are a tad bit more hymnic, but I can’t really explain it.
